How to Lube Switches Properly Without Ruining a Whole Batch

Grease selection, brush technique, coverage targets and the mistakes that turn a smooth linear into a sluggish mess — plus how much lube a full board actually needs.

Why lubing works at all

Every unlubed switch produces friction in two places: where the stem rails slide against the housing walls, and where the spring coils rub against each other and against the stem pole. That friction is what you hear as scratchiness and feel as a gritty downstroke. Lubricant fills the microscopic roughness left by the injection moulding process, so the surfaces glide instead of catching. The result is a smoother stroke, a lower and deeper sound, and the disappearance of the metallic spring ping that ruins otherwise good boards.

It is worth being honest about the effort. Lubing ninety switches by hand takes between two and four hours the first time, and the difference is large but not magical. A cheap switch that is badly toleranced will still wobble after lubing. What lubing reliably fixes is scratch, ping and a thin, hollow sound. What it cannot fix is loose tolerances, a bad plate, or a case that rings. Set your expectations there and the work pays off.

Choosing the right grease

The industry standard for linears is Krytox GPL 205 Grade 0, a thick PFPE grease that stays put and dramatically smooths travel. For tactiles, most builders switch to a thinner option such as Krytox GPL 105 oil or Tribosys 3203, because a thick grease rounds off and weakens the tactile bump you paid for. Tribosys 3204 sits between the two and is a safe general choice when you are lubing a mixed batch and do not want to buy three products.

Springs are usually treated separately. A tiny amount of 105 oil, or bag-lubing an entire batch of springs by shaking them in a zip bag with a few drops of oil, eliminates ping quickly and cheaply. Never use silicone-based automotive or bicycle greases: many contain solvents that attack polycarbonate housings and cause hazing or cracking weeks later. Also avoid dielectric grease on the metal leaf — a lubricated contact can become intermittent, which produces the worst kind of fault to diagnose.

Technique: thin, even, deliberate

Use a small flat brush, size 0 to 2, and load it by dabbing rather than dipping. The correct amount is far less than beginners expect: the brush should look almost dry, with a faint sheen rather than a visible bead. Paint the four inner walls of the bottom housing where the stem rails travel, add a light pass on the stem's side rails and the back of the stem, and leave the front face — where the leaf makes contact — completely dry.

Work in a fixed rotation so you do not lose track: open the switch, lube the bottom housing, lube the spring or drop in a pre-lubed one, seat the stem, lube the stem rails, close the housing, test the stroke with your finger, set it aside. A switch opener and a small tray with compartments turn this from tedium into rhythm. Ten switches every fifteen minutes is a realistic pace, which means a sixty-five per cent board is a comfortable evening's work with a film to watch in the background.

How much lube you actually need

The most common shopping mistake is buying a five-gram syringe for a full-size build and running out at key eighty. A useful planning figure is roughly 0.02 to 0.03 grams of grease per switch when applying a thin coat to housing and stem, plus a smaller amount again if you lube springs individually. That works out at about two to three grams for a sixty-five per cent board and four to five grams for a full-size layout, with sensible margin for the inevitable overloaded brush.

Application thickness moves that number a lot. A heavy hand can triple consumption while producing a worse result, because excess grease pools around the stem pole and creates a mushy, damped stroke with a sticky return. If a switch feels slower to reset after lubing, you used too much. Mistakes, fixes and maintenance

Three failures account for almost every disappointing batch. First, lubing the leaf, which causes intermittent or dead keys — fix it by disassembling and cleaning the leaf with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab. Second, over-lubing tactiles, which sands down the bump — fix it by wiping the stem legs and reassembling with a thinner product. Third, inconsistent coverage across the batch, which makes some keys sound different from others; this is prevented by keeping the brush load constant and re-dabbing at the same interval rather than whenever the brush feels dry.

Lubed switches do not need routine maintenance. PFPE greases do not evaporate or gum up, and a well-lubed switch stays smooth for years of daily typing. The realistic reasons to revisit them are a spilled drink, a dust-heavy environment, or a change of heart about spring weight. Because you will already have the board apart for a spring swap, plan those two jobs together and you only pay the disassembly cost once.
